There are two main types of galvanizing for chain link fences: cold galvanizing and hot dip galvanizing. Here's how they differ:
Hot Dip Galvanizing: This method involves immersing the chain link fence in molten zinc. During the process, the zinc forms a thick, protective coating through a series of chemical reactions that occur at high temperatures. Although this method provides a bright and aesthetically pleasing finish and offers excellent corrosion resistance, the production speed and coating thickness can vary. The minimum allowable thickness of hot dip galvanizing typically ranges from 45 to 300 microns.
Cold Galvanizing: In this process, the chain link fence is directly immersed in a zinc solution, where an electrolytic reaction causes the zinc to adhere to the surface. The resulting zinc layer is thinner compared to hot dip galvanizing, which makes it less resistant to rust over time. Cold galvanizing is generally less durable and may require more frequent maintenance.
Both cold galvanizing and hot dip galvanizing chain link fences have a silvery white appearance, but there is a notable difference in their finish. Cold galvanizing fences generally have a brighter color compared to those treated with hot dip galvanizing.
In terms of performance, hot dip galvanizing offers superior corrosion resistance. Cold galvanizing fences typically begin to show signs of rust within 5 to 7 months, while hot dip galvanized fences can last up to 10 years without rusting. Additionally, hot dip galvanizing tends to be more expensive than cold galvanizing.
The anti-corrosion lifespan of a galvanizing chain link fence can also vary depending on the raw materials used. For instance, higher zinc content in the coating can lead to greater natural corrosion resistance.
Cost-Effective: Hot dip galvanizing is generally more affordable compared to other coating methods, such as lacquer coating.
High Reliability: The zinc coating forms a metallurgical bond with the steel, becoming an integral part of the steel surface. This bond enhances the durability and reliability of the coating.
Enhanced Toughness: The zinc coating develops a unique metallurgical structure that provides excellent resistance to mechanical damage during both transportation and use.
Comprehensive Protection: The hot dip galvanizing process ensures that every part of the chain link fence, including depressions, sharp corners, and hidden areas, receives full zinc coverage, offering thorough protection.
Efficiency: This coating method is quicker than many alternatives, eliminating the need for additional varnishing on-site after installation and saving both time and effort.
Stainless steel galvanized chain link fences are made from various grades of stainless steel wire, including SS 201, SS 304, SS 316, SS 316L, and 310S. These fences are known for their excellent corrosion resistance and long service life. The likelihood of rusting in a chain link fence largely depends on the quality of the material used. Occasionally, high-quality stainless steel galvanized fences may exhibit discoloration or darkening. This is not rust but rather oxidation, which can typically be removed with a cloth or other cleaning materials.
Stainless steel galvanized chain link fence made of materials of poor quality may cost less than other materials, but it is easy to rust, affecting its performance. Hence, it is better for users to buy high-quality chain link fences.
